Joan Miró – Materiality and Metamorphosis

Until January 8th, the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda hosts an exhibition of one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Joan Miró.

After the success in Porto, where the presentation debuted in June 2016, at the Museu de Serralves, Joan Miró – Materiality and Metamorphosis arrives to Lisbon in an exhibition curated by Robert Lubar Messeri.

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893, but the “emotional landscapes that shaped him as a person and an artist were principally those of Mont-roig, Paris, and Majorca, and later those of New York and Japan”.

This landscapes and his connection to the land were crucial to his work. Joan Miró avoided the academic knowledge, and his interest for the everyday objects, natural environment and his constant search for the pure form of art made it difficult to insert him in any specific movement.

The collection of 85 works was put on the spotlight when it was about to be auctioned at Christie’s in London, after a long “affair” between the Portuguese Government and the bank BPN.

The exhibition had 240 thousand visitors in Porto, and covers various decades of Miró’s career and the transformations his work went through from 1924 to 1981, in terms of his pictorial languages and the materials used.

The works on display include drawing and painting, tapestry and collage such as those created in the 1930s with lithographic elements, and much more.
