Lisboa, Cidade Triste e Alegre – Architecture of a Book
Curated by Rita Palla Aragão, the exhibition “Lisboa, Cidade Triste e Alegre: Architecture of a Book” offers a deeper view of Victor Palla’s and Costa Martins’ photography book edited in 1959, which many believe to be the most important Portuguese photography book of the 20th century.
For 3 years the authors wandered the streets of Lisboa and captured images of the city and its inhabitants, revealing a hidden town that is simultaneously sad and happy.
The exhibition based on the authors’ legacy, as well as on the construction of Lisboa to the present day, includes models, posters, and photographs – of which 20 are previously unpublished and printed from the original negatives.
From 6 thousand photos taken, the authors chose around 200 and a unique and long index, explaining the creative process, and a series of poems that convert the work into a true graphic poem.
